内容記述 | "This paper investigates the mechanism of a typical passive construction (namely, ""be + past participle"") in the language system of English from the view point of cognitive linguistics. Cognitive linguistics has an important principle; that, ""Different forms have different meanings"". Therefore, we can be sure that there is something different within the grammatical exchange for active and passive constructions. Normally, however, few students of EFL in Japan understand the relatively delicate gap between these two constructions. This is partly because they have never received a linguistic explanation about the system of the English language. Also, this is simply because teachers have never found it necessary to refer to the gap. However, I would claim, this is because there are few people who know that our construal tends to reflect on our language use by means of our choice in the cognitive process. A cognitive linguistic approach can explain why we choose a passive construction even when the event itself is active. Also, this approach can point out for us that there are some differences in the process of exchange between the passive and active voice in the pragmatic context, even if both constructions describe the same event. For example, the sentence structure is changed from active to passive when we interpret that the actor of the event is not as significant as the target of the action. Also, the grammatical subject of a passive construction doesn't consist of an agent (or, an actor) in the semantic structure of English. Passive construction is also explored from linguistic typological perspectives. In that section, passive constructions of English are systematically examined referring to the Japanese language. The comparative analysis will help us to discover how we can properly make use of the difference between the passive and active voice in English." | |||||||
